The Brink’s-MAT Robbery, often referred to as the ‘Gold Heist of the Century,’ remains one of the most audacious and infamous heists in history. It took place on November 26, 1983, at the Brink’s-MAT warehouse located near Heathrow Airport in London, England. The Perfect Plan
The mastermind behind the robbery was Brian Robinson, a small-time criminal with big ambitions. He enlisted the help of his childhood friend, Micky McAvoy, and several other accomplices, including inside man Anthony Black. Black, a security guard at the Brink’s-MAT warehouse, provided crucial information about the facility’s layout and security measures, enabling the team to devise a near-flawless plan.
The Heist
On the day of the robbery, the six-man gang entered the warehouse disguised as security guards. Armed with firearms and petrol, they quickly overpowered the real security personnel, doused them in petrol, and threatened to set them alight if they didn’t comply. This intimidation tactic was effective, and the robbers gained access to the vaults without setting off any alarms.
Initially, the thieves had planned to steal only £3 million in cash, but they were shocked to discover the vast amount of gold bullion, diamonds, and other precious metals stored in the vault. They decided to seize the opportunity, loading three tonnes of gold bullion onto their van before making their escape.
The Aftermath

In 1984, Robinson and McAvoy were arrested and sentenced to 25 and 26 years in prison, respectively.
