‘The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live’ Sets Premiere Date at AMC
AMC Networks has announced the premiere date for the highly anticipated next series in “The Walking Dead” Universe, “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.” This new installment is set to debut on Sunday, February 25, 2024, both on AMC and the streaming service AMC+. The announcement was made during the series finale of “Fear the Walking Dead,” highlighting the continued expansion of the popular franchise.
“The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” is a post-apocalyptic series created by Scott M. Gimple and Danai Gurira. It marks the sixth spinoff and the seventh television series within “The Walking Dead” franchise. The series is set after the conclusion of the original “The Walking Dead” series and will feature the return of iconic characters. Andrew Lincoln reprises his role as Rick Grimes, a former sheriff’s deputy and the leader of the Alexandria Safe-Zone, alongside Danai Gurira as Michonne, a katana-wielding warrior and Rick’s romantic partner. Pollyanna McIntosh also returns as Jadis Stokes/Anne, the warrant officer of the CRM who disappeared along with Rick Grimes in the CRM helicopter. Additional cast members include Lesley-Ann Brandt as Pearl Thorne, Terry O’Quinn as Major General Beale, Matthew August Jeffers as Nat, and Craig Tate as Lieutenant Colonel Donald Okafor.
The series, consisting of six episodes, is intended to be a limited series. It was initially titled “The Walking Dead: Rick & Michonne” in April 2023 but was later retitled to “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” in July 2023. The creators, Gimple and Gurira, also serve as writers for the series, with Gimple acting as the showrunner. The story of the series was set up by “The Walking Dead’s” series finale titled “Rest in Peace,” which featured the return of Rick and Michonne. Principal photography for “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” began on February 15, 2023, and wrapped up on May 29, 2023. The filming took place under the working title “Summit” and was completed in New Jersey. The series’ first episode is directed by Bert and Bertie.
“The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. The narrative poses intriguing questions about the nature of their relationship in this new reality. Are Rick and Michonne enemies, lovers, victims, victors? And without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead? The show is executive-produced by showrunner Scott M. Gimple, Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira, Denise Huth, and Brian Bockrath.
This new series is a continuation of the legacy of “The Walking Dead,” a franchise that has captivated audiences with its exploration of survival, humanity, and the complexities of a world overrun by the undead. Fans of the franchise are eagerly anticipating the return of beloved characters and the unfolding of new stories in this latest addition to the “Walking Dead” universe.
